Impact of Nurse Manager Leadership Styles on Work Engagement: A Systematic Literature Review

Aims. This systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesise the results of studies that examine relationship between nurse managers’ leadership practices staff nurses’ work engagement in hospital settings provide recommendations for improvement further research. Background. A lack supportive is identified as one most common reasons nurses leave employment. To meet global shortage nurses, managers need maximise retention engagement. Evaluation. was conducted identify research published 2010 2021 registered PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, EMCare, Eric databases. The methodology guidelines outlined Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Methodology Systematic Reviews were followed, reported using PRISMA 2020 guidelines. protocol with PROSPERO (ID CRD42021277463). Key Issue. Eleven (11) from 12 articles included this review. Three main style themes identified, these showed statistically significant direct indirect relationships engagement: relationally focused, task-focused, leadership. Work mainly assessed terms dedication, absorption, vigour. effects styles on found be mediated by trust leader, environmental resources such structural empowerment, six work-life areas (workload, control, values, community, rewards, fairness), person-job fit, organisational support, leader-member exchange, personal self-efficacy decision authority. Conclusion. a correlation positive manager nurses. Implications Nursing Management. suggest nursing can improved implementing relational behaviours. findings will useful developing appropriate leaders’ styles, improving their workplace environments, planning training.
